Recently Michael and I travelled with a friend to Mexico. We rented a fantastic beach house right on the Sea of Cortez. We arrived Friday afternoon and stayed through Monday morning. I regret not taking more pictures so I could show what Mexico really looks like so I'll try my best to describe it.
All of the street signs, traffic signs and billboards are in Spanish. It was a bit challenging to read and understand but luckily on the way in they gave us a little map of the town and some "useful" Spanish to English translations.
The most useful which now I can't remember was "No Money". Mexico is known for the shopping and bartering. Although we were in a gated community with a private beach we were still bombarded from sun up to sun down with peddlers walking the beach selling everything from burritos to umbrellas. And they don't take NO for an answer. They would walk right up on to the porch right next to our chairs and try to sell their items.
The town is very poor, many of the houses were constructed out of corrugated cardboard and shipping pallets. It was sad to see people live like that, and even more sad that for many of them the scenery in their back yard was the views of the spectacular resorts. What a contrast between wealthy and poor.

oh Mexico.... that is a strange place to go when you're away from the touristy stuff.
